2024 Honorees

Visionary Award: Daniel L. Friedman 

Daniel L. Friedman is a dynamic leader whose career spans educational technology and the fine and performing arts. As the Director of Educational Technology and Grants at Hicksville Public Schools, he oversees technology initiatives for 5,900 students and 1,200 staff members. His leadership has driven projects like the deployment of one-to-one devices and the integration of Google Apps for Education, enhancing digital literacy and streamlining processes across the district.

Dan has chaired committees that develop long-term technology plans, modernizing instructional practices and positioning Hicksville Public Schools as a leader in educational technology. He has also overseen significant upgrades to the district’s data network and security systems, ensuring a safe digital environment. As Data Privacy Officer, Dan has been pivotal in navigating audits, strengthening the district’s compliance and safety.

Before his work in educational technology, Dan served as a Fine and Performing Arts Administrator and music teacher. At Oyster Bay – East Norwich Schools, he directed K-12 arts programs and developed innovative initiatives like a digital photography program, while producing dozens of concerts and musicals.

Dan has a deep interest in exploring the intersection of pedagogy and emerging technologies, particularly in the study of highly effective questioning techniques and their integration into large language models. He is fascinated by how prompt engineering can enhance the ability of AI systems to deliver more insightful, student-centered responses. His research in this area focuses on bridging human intelligence with machine learning to optimize educational outcomes, creating smarter, more adaptive systems for both students and teachers.

His future goals include continuing to explore new ways to use technology to enhance education and inspire creativity, ensuring that students have the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Most Innovative Use of Technology Award: Mrs. Christine Maniscalco

With 24 years of experience in the West Islip Schools, Mrs. Christine Maniscalco has significantly enhanced the educational landscape as a Library Media Specialist. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) certified librarian she works with both students and faculty to help cultivate a research friendly environment. In addition to her role as the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library Liaison and a newly appointed Council Member, she actively contributes to various district and school-wide initiatives, including the Professional Development Committee, the Informational Technology Committee, and the High School Site-Based Team.

A passionate advocate for innovative teaching practices, Mrs. Maniscalco is dedicated to the integration of technology in education. She enthusiastically shares her knowledge with both students and staff, demonstrating cutting-edge tools and methodologies. Her dynamic workshops at prestigious conferences, such as the Future of Education National Convention (FETC), the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies (ASSET), and the Long Island Educational Summit Conference (LITES), explore vital topics such as Sublimation for the Classroom,, Innovative Tech Tips and Strategies, Makerspace Technology, Formative Assessment Tools, and the Application of AI in the Classroom.

Mrs. Maniscalco's collaborative spirit is evident in her partnerships with various subject area teachers, including the Engineering Technology Department, where students designed, constructed, and will  install a Free Little Library in the library courtyard this fall.

Her strengths in problem-solving and unwavering commitment to professional development make her an invaluable resource for educators and students alike in the West Islip community. Mrs. Maniscalco leads a wide variety of engaging professional development classes, sharing her expertise for technology and research-based skills.  Her enthusiasm inspires educators to use new and innovative tools effectively in the classroom.

Mrs. Maniscalco’s educational journey included a year-long teaching Internship through the University of Bath during a study abroad experience in England.  She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Old Westbury and a Master of Library and Information Science  from C.W. Post Long Island University.
